What is appleseed?
appleseed is an open source, physically-based global illumination rendering engine primarily designed for animation and visual effects. It provides individuals and small studios with a complete, reliable, fully open rendering package built with modern technologies. The platform offers native integrations with leading digital content creation applications including Autodesk 3ds Max, Autodesk Maya, and Blender through dedicated plugins.
The rendering engine supports advanced features such as Cryptomatte AOVs, render checkpointing for resuming interrupted renders, on-the-fly OpenShadingLanguage shader compilation, and modern denoiser integration including Intel Open Image Denoise. It implements state-of-the-art rendering techniques including Practical Path Guiding for improved indirect lighting performance and features innovative light path recording and visualization technology with Light Path Expressions support.
