Music theory provides the foundational framework for understanding how music works, encompassing the study of harmony, melody, rhythm, scales, chords, and compositional techniques. Core Concepts

Notes, Intervals, and Scales

Musical Alphabet — Seven letters (A, B, C, D, E, F, G) repeat across octaves, with 12 distinct notes including sharps and flats in Western music

Intervals — Distance between two notes measured in half steps or whole steps; described by number (2nd, 3rd, 5th) and quality (major, minor, perfect, augmented, diminished)

Scales — Sets of notes within an octave arranged by pitch; major scales sound bright and happy, minor scales sound dark and emotional
