What is Automatonism?

Automatonism is a virtual modular synthesizer developed by Johan Eriksson, a PhD student at Birmingham Conservatoire. It features 81 modules in version 2.0, along with dynamic preset management and advanced parameter mapping capabilities. The software runs on the open-source Pure Data platform, ensuring compatibility across all major operating systems.

This tool builds upon Eriksson's earlier project, Xodular, by expanding module options and enhancing features for improved performability and expressiveness. It is designed to facilitate the creation of generative algorithms, encouraging users to explore algorithmic music composition. The website also includes a 7-track album and tutorial video series called Synth Recipes to demonstrate the instrument's capabilities.
