Introduction to Speech Writing
Speech writing is the art and craft of creating content specifically designed to be delivered orally to an audience. Unlike other forms of writing, speeches are written for the ear, not the eye—they must sound natural when spoken aloud, connect emotionally with listeners, and achieve their purpose in a single pass without the luxury of re-reading.
Effective speech writing combines storytelling, persuasion, and performance. The speechwriter must understand not only the message but also the speaker's voice, the audience's expectations, and the context of delivery. A well-crafted speech can inspire movements, change minds, celebrate achievements, comfort the grieving, and create lasting memories.
