SKILL.md

Article Writing Excellence

This Skill provides advanced techniques for creating exceptional articles that are engaging, concise, and impactful.

Core Principles

1. Word Economy

  • Every word must earn its place
  • Cut ruthlessly: if a sentence doesn't advance understanding or engagement, remove it
  • Use active voice to reduce word count while increasing clarity
  • Replace phrases with single words when possible ("in order to" → "to")

2. Narrative Momentum

  • Start with a hook that creates immediate curiosity or relevance
  • Each paragraph should flow naturally to the next
  • Use transitional phrases sparingly—let ideas connect organically
  • End sections with forward momentum, not summaries

3. Reader Engagement

  • Address the reader directly ("you") to create connection
  • Use concrete examples before abstract concepts
  • Create "aha moments" by revealing insights progressively
  • Balance familiar concepts with new perspectives

Advanced Techniques

Opening Hooks

Effective hooks:

  • A surprising statistic or fact
  • A relatable scenario the reader recognizes
  • A question that reveals a gap in knowledge
  • A bold statement that challenges assumptions

Avoid:

  • Generic introductions ("In today's world...")
  • Dictionary definitions
  • Overly broad statements

Paragraph Structure

  • Lead sentence: The main point or insight
  • Supporting sentences: Evidence, examples, or explanation
  • Transition: Natural bridge to next idea

Keep paragraphs to 3-5 lines. White space is your friend.

Example Integration

Good example structure:

  1. Set the scene briefly (1-2 sentences)
  2. Show the action or decision (2-3 sentences)
  3. Reveal the outcome or insight (1-2 sentences)

Example quality checklist:

  • ✅ Specific and concrete
  • ✅ Relevant to target audience's actual work
  • ✅ Illustrates the point clearly
  • ✅ Memorable and relatable

Conclusion Craft

Strong conclusions:

  • Reinforce the core insight (1 sentence)
  • Provide clear next action or application (1-2 sentences)
  • End with forward momentum ("Now you can..." or "Next time you...")

Weak conclusions to avoid:

  • Summarizing every point
  • Generic platitudes
  • Introducing new information
  • Numbered lists of takeaways

Word Count Discipline

When Approaching Limits

  1. Cut redundant examples: 2 strong examples > 3 mediocre ones
  2. Trim theoretical elaboration: Keep theory lean, focus on application
  3. Remove repetitive phrasing: Say it once, well
  4. Condense transitions: Let ideas flow naturally
  5. Simplify explanations: Use fewer words to convey the same meaning

Self-Editing Process

  1. Write first draft without worrying about length
  2. Identify core message and key insights
  3. Cut everything that doesn't serve the core message
  4. Tighten remaining sentences
  5. Verify word count and cut more if needed

Style Refinement

Voice & Tone

  • Conversational: Write like explaining to a smart colleague
  • Professional: Not casual, but not academic
  • Confident: State insights clearly, avoid hedging
  • Respectful: Honor the reader's time and intelligence

Sentence Variety

  • Mix short punchy sentences with longer explanatory ones
  • Vary sentence structure to maintain rhythm
  • Use parallel structure for lists or comparisons
  • Break up long sentences for clarity

Precision in Language

  • Choose specific words over generic ones
  • Use strong verbs instead of weak verb + adverb combinations
  • Prefer concrete nouns over abstract ones
  • Eliminate filler words ("very", "really", "quite", "somewhat")

Checklist Before Submission

  • Word count: 800-1000 (prefer shorter end)
  • Opening hooks reader immediately
  • Paragraphs are 3-5 lines maximum
  • Conversational, professional tone throughout
  • Concrete, role-specific examples included
  • Theory-practice balance (~30-40% / 60-70%)
  • No checklist drift (narrative maintained)
  • Conclusion has momentum (not exhaustive summary)
  • Sources properly formatted
  • Scannable structure with clear sections
  • Every sentence serves a purpose
  • Active voice used throughout
  • Reader addressed directly ("you")

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  1. Checklist drift: Converting narrative into bullet points
  2. Over-explanation: Explaining simple concepts at length
  3. Under-explanation: Assuming reader knows too much
  4. Example overload: Too many examples, not enough insight
  5. Weak conclusions: Summarizing instead of inspiring action
  6. Word count violations: Exceeding limits due to lack of discipline
  7. Tone inconsistency: Mixing casual and formal language
  8. Abstract over concrete: Theory without practical application
